Website for the Premier Award for Excellence in Engineering Education Courseware. Engineering courseware is computer-based educational material that can be used to assist engineering students in their learning process. For the Premier Award, courseware should cover significant breadth and/or depth of material. Courseware can be used in lectures, during recitation sections, as self-paced study, as reference material for the student, or as exercises for the student to perform alone or in a group. Typically, courseware takes advantage of multiple media, such as graphics, photographic images, sound, video and animation to illustrate engineering concepts, devices, or practices. Courseware will often include features such as hyperlinks or hypertext which permit users to explore related information or greater depth of information as they are interested.

Web-CAT is a flexible, tailorable automated grading system designed to process computer programming assignments. Web-CAT runs as a web application on a server and provides all of its capabilities via a web interface-all submission activity, feedback, viewing of results, and grading activities take place via your web browser. Its plug-in architecture makes Web-CAT highly customizable and extensible, allowing it to support virtually any model of program grading, assessment, and feedback generation. Many instructors use Web-CAT to grade students on how well they test their own code.

One of the cases in the SimScience web-site devoted to areas of science where computer simulations are at the forefront of discovery. Cracking Dams asks: What happens when a dam cracks? What's a dam? How do things crack? Can engineers model the cracking of a dam? - Crackling Noise What is the link between predicting earthquakes and crumpling a piece of paper? Will understanding one help engineers understand the other? The site is divided into 3 groups of grade levels. beginning: grades K-4 or general beginners; intermediate: grades 5-8; advanced: grades 9-12. Age appropriate questions, lesson plans, teacher's guides, java simulations, case histories, scenariios, quizes, glossaries, help and webquests are provided for each level. Case studies are supplemented with digital movies.

BEST Sitesim is a computer program designed to simulate drilling investigations for hazardous waste or geotechnical studies. The software provides students with the opportunity to gather and intepret geologic data in the same manner they will when they are working in industry. The CD ROM can be obtained by contacting the author at: [email protected]. It contains 68 lecture files with notes and audio,17 flash animations, and 31 whiteboard examples. See "comments" in NEEDS for links to papers and supplemental material concerning this CD ROM.

M-MODEL8 is a full simulation of traditional engineering mechanics homework solutions including free-body diagram construction, variable listing and mathematical modelling. It is a free-form solution unlike other online homework systems that are linear processes based upon multi-choice, short answer, pair matching and etc. responses. M-MODEL8 focusses upon model building and leaves equation solving and answer production, at the discretion of the instructor, to internal equation solvers. An intelligent tutor, hints/tips, helps, grading and error checker systems are always available to students to provide instant feedback, coaching, motivation, reflection and intellectual development. Instructors may use the included authoring tools to modify the provided problems or create their own problems.

iJDSP is an application (app) that enables simulation and visualization of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) concepts and algorithms on iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. This app has been developed for education purposes in the Signal Processing Laboratory of the SenSIP Center at Arizona State University. iJDSP provides an intuitive multi-touch user interface; DSP simulations can be established as a block diagram using a simple touch-n-drop procedure. iJDSP has a rich suite of signal processing functions including signal generators, digital filters, pole-zero and frequency response computation, FIR and IIR filter design algorithms, FFT, plot functions, a sound recorder/player, and many others.

The West Point Bridge Designer is a computer-aided design (CAD) software package developed to introduce students to engineering through the design of a steel highway bridge. The software provides an engaging, hands-on civil engineering design experience that demonstrates how practicing engineers design real structures. Given a realistic set of design specifications, the user models a bridge, tests it for structural adequacy, and optimizes it to minimize cost.

Consider greenfoot as a combination between a framework for creating two-dimensional grid assignments in Java and an integrated development environment (class browser, editor, compiler, execution, etc.) suitable for novice programmers. While greenfoot supports the full Java language, it is especially useful for programming exercises that has a visual element. In greenfoot object visualisation and object interaction are the key elements.

The Multimedia Virtual Disk Drive Design Studio is an engineering design case study using interactive multimedia courseware for undergraduate engineering and science students. The purpose of this multimedia case is to introduce students to the world of mechatronics in the form of a disk drive. Students play the role of a project engineer for the ACME disk drive company and will have to mine out the necessary information from a multimedia archive in order to build a new disk drive model. Students will have to keep track of the development and production costs. They will also be asked to launch their new disk drives in a certain time frame, simulating the idea of time-to-market. This interactive disk drive case study is ideally complemented by hands-on mechanical dissection of an actual disk drive.
This entire project is put together using Macromedia Director. This cross-platform software will allow us to distribute CD-ROMs to a wide spectrum of students around the country with 2x CD-ROM drives. The author is currently collaborating with Western Digital Corporation and IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose. Western Digital Corp. provided the mathematical model for performance calculations while IBM has contributed in the form of technical literature and expert opinions. Named Premier Courseware of 1997.
